Surveys

One inspection. The report you need.

Buying

Pre-purchase survey

A full walk-through before you close, with an optional haul-out and sea trial. You get the deficiencies in writing so you can negotiate or walk away.

Insuring

Insurance condition and value

The survey your carrier asks for at renewal or on a new policy. Safety equipment, systems and a stated fair market and replacement value.

On the job

Out of the water, nothing hides.

Whether the boat is in a travel lift or on its trailer, I get eyes on what you can't see from the dock.

  • Hull sides and bottom for cracks, blisters and past repairs
  • Running gear, props, shafts and trim tabs
  • Engines and how they're mounted
  • Thru-hulls and bonding below the waterline

Before survey day

Get the boat ready.

A ready boat means a faster survey and a more complete report. If you're the buyer, send this list to the seller or broker.

Buying from out of town?

You don't have to be there. I'll send photos of what I find and call you to walk through the findings before you make a decision.

  1. Clear the clutter. Empty lockers, the cabin and the bilge access so every space can be opened and seen.
  2. Batteries charged, fuel aboard. Engines, pumps, lights and electronics all need to run.
  3. Keys and access. Ignition keys, lock combinations and anything needed to open hatches and panels.
  4. Paperwork on board. Registration or documentation, plus any service and repair records.
  5. Book the haul-out. If you want the bottom inspected, schedule the lift with the yard for the same day.
  6. Plan the sea trial. A captain or the owner aboard, enough fuel, and a route to open water.
Common questions

Good to know.

Do I need a survey to buy a boat?

Most lenders and insurers require one for used boats, and even when they don't, it's the best way to find problems before the money changes hands.

Can I come along?

Yes, and I encourage it. You'll learn the boat as I go through it, and you can ask questions on the spot.

Do you need the boat out of the water?

For a pre-purchase survey, a haul-out is the only way to see the bottom, running gear and thru-hulls below the waterline. For an insurance renewal, it often isn't needed. I'll tell you which makes sense for your boat.

Will the survey damage anything?

No. The inspection is non-destructive. Nothing is drilled, cut or taken apart, and the boat is left the way I found it.

Will my insurance company or bank accept the report?

The report follows the format insurers and lenders expect: findings by system, safety items called out first, and both fair market value and replacement cost.

How much does a survey cost?

It depends on the boat's size and what you need done. Call or text with the year, make, model and length for a free quote.
